Federal Downwinders Compensation Program
In a bipartisan effort, legislative actions seem to be continually underway to expand the geographic coverage area for the federal Downwinders® compensation program. This will help to ensure that more people receive the financial compensation due to them as a result of their acquiring cancer because of exposure to government-created radiation during the Cold War.
Possible future amendments to regulations governing the Downwinders® compensation program include the following:
Arizona, Idaho, Colorado, Montana, New Mexico, Utah, Nevada

Radiation exposure compensation – proposed legislation
Alamogordo, New Mexico – In a major step forward in the fight for justice for victims of radiation exposure, U.S. Sen. Tom Udall along with the Tularosa Basin Downwinders, testified Wednesday in a key Senate hearing on the need to enact legislation to expand the Radiation Exposure Compensation Act (RECA) and provide compensation to all New Mexicans, Tribal members and families throughout the country affected by exposure to radiation during the Cold War.
